Happy Birthday to the man who enriched the reading habits of our generation! He introduced us to the Victorian workhouses, to characters like Scrooge, Marley, Oliver Twist, Fagin, Dodger, Pip, Mrs Havisham, Bill Sikes, Nancy; they were all real people with flesh and blood to our young minds. Oliver’s plea “Please sir, I want some more”, used to haunt us. Our hearts went out to Bob Cratchit, Scrooge’s underpaid assistant. Bill Sikes and his vicious dog could curdle our blood!
Today is his 206th birthday. You are immortal Mr Dickens!

Good one ! Yes, his characters took us to a world of pain, suffering, simple pleasures of simple people… And his stories filled our homes with warmth..And as he says it became a ” place where ” people who we ” love are gathered together” and shared joys and sorrows around the table…

Your sketch is very well done. That kind of silhouette reminds me of the ones my grandmother had hung on her wall. She had a smalll collection — perhaps a half-dozen — that were cut from paper, and I often tried to duplicate them. No success, however!
I’ve always enjoyed Dickens, and loved his Christmas Carol. Thanks for marking “his” day!
